Dolmen at Saumur

This is a prehistoric site just west of Saumur in an adjoining town. It consists of a grave/monument made up of huge flat stones in the form of a stone lined room. The stones often weigh 15 tons or more. The stones are normally not dressed (smoothed) but used directly. Dating is difficult since no clues other than the stones themselves were left here. The roof stones are more than a foot thick and can be 10 or more feet long. A person can easily stand inside.
