Spring, 2007
Eighth Homework Set...April 6, 2007. Due April 12, 2007

(1) Determine if air at sea level on the surface of the Earth is degenerate. Show your work. What about electrons in silver?

(2) Calculate the radius of a $1.2 M_{\odot}$ white dwarf.

(3) According to current views of cosmology, there should be white dwarfs with ages of $10^{10}$ years. What would be the surface temperature of such a white dwarf? In what part of the spectrum would it be best to observe such an object? You may use graphical results as well as algebraic ones, but properly document your sources in either case.

(4) Calculate the radius of a $1.44 M_{\odot}$ neutron star. Are the neutrons relativistic or non-relativistic?

(5) Problem 15.7 from the textbook.

(6) Problem 15.9

(7) Problem 15.11

(8) Problem 15.14
