This assignment is intended to be done by 2 or 3 students together. I am not providing all the cookbook-type details on how to do this. Discuss with your coworker how one proceeds. Obviously, I will be delighted to discuss matters with you, and make suggestions which might be helpful.

You will be given a Gnomon similar to that erected by Anaximander at Sparta, circa 550BC. Describe what you are doing, don’t just give me a big pile of numbers!

(1) Sometime in the next week (more than once would be even better) use it to measure Local Apparent Noon. Compare it with Central Standard Time and Local Mean Time. For this you will have to think about you can know “regular” time to a high degree of precision. Use your measurements to obtain Apparent Time – Mean Time, and see if you can verify the “Equation of Time” plot given below.

(2) Using your same observations and data, and helped by your SC1 chart, calculate the latitude of Iowa City. Do you get the right answer?
