29:52 Homework Set #3

Assigned: October 19, 2001

Due: October 26, 2001

Confused? Don’t go around miserable and despondent! Ask for help and explanation from me. Even better, work on these problems with one or two of your classmates.

  1. The Imbrium basin on the moon is about 700 kilometers in diameter.  Approximately how large was the impacting object that produced this impact basin.
  2. Look at the image of Miranda at the following URL: http://www.solarviews.com/cap/uranus/miranda4.htm .  In about a paragraph, discuss what we can say about its geology and geological history.
  3. Pick an example of a Valley Network channel, or an Outflow channel on Mars, and compare it to rivers on Earth (Mississippi, Amazon, Makquoketa).  For this problem, you have to come up with some material and carry out an analysis.  Hint:  Internet connections in the lecture notes are one way (although not necessarily the best resource) to attack this problem.
  4. The solar elongation of Venus is currently 25 degrees.  The solar elongation is the angle we measure between the Sun and Venus.  How far is it from the Earth?  Consider both orbits, that of the Earth and that of Venus, to be circles.  You may use geometric instruments and measure the answer.  Hint: there will be two possible solutions.  Venus is presently at the more distant of the two possible solutions.
  5. In class I said that Aphrodite and Ishtar on Venus were comparable to continents on Earth.  Form an argument, using data on Venus, which would support or refute this statement.  Hint:  internet links given in the lecture notes could help in answering this.
