Introduction to Astrophysics II, 29:120
Spring, 2009
Fourth Homework Set...February 13, 2009. Due February 19, 2009

This is a shorter assignment than usual this week, to allow you to get ready for the exam. The question I really want to ask you will come next week.

(1) Are the electrons in a bar of copper at room temperature degenerate? Show the calculations that allow you to reach your conclusion.

(2) Problem 16.1 from the textbook.

(3) Problem 16.5 from the textbook.

(4) Generalize the derivation of the Fermi Energy presented in class to the case of a 2 dimensional star, i.e. particles are confined to a box of size $L$ in both the $x$ and $y$ directions. Compare your result to the equation derived in class for 1D, and the correct value for the Fermi Energy given in eq. 15.2 of the book.

(5) Problem 16.6 from the textbook.
