Microscope Set Up
Shown here is a Mitutoyo coordinate measuring machine used in the laboratory for examining and measuring devices with a precision of 2.5 microns (0.0001"). It consists of a high precision stereo microscope and rests on a air vibration isolation table. Images can be directly viewed or shown on a color monitor. The current setup shown here is a measurement of the thermal coefficient of expansion of an aluminum alloy.
CTE setup
The length of a bar of the alloy is measured as a function of temperature from -20C to room temperature as shown in the figure. Note that the bar changed length at a rate of 5 parts in 7000 for a temperature change of about 40C.
