Charles Newsom:Research
As an experimental particle physicist, C. Newsom participates in many
experiments around the world. He is currently involved in completing
an analysis of a charm baryon experiment (SELEX) at Fermilab and in
the research and development of a Pixel Detector at a new Fermilab
colliding beam experiment (BTeV). He also helped lead the design
and construction team of a new test
beam facility at Fermilab. This facility is now up and
running. It is being used by 2 different detector groups within
his collaboration (CMS) and several other international groups.
To this end, he has two laboratories at the University of Iowa equipped
with the following capabilities;
- Linux computer farm with 6 cpus and a two terabyte disk system.
- High Efficiency Air Filtration system (HEPA) for VLSI silicon chip work
- PC based, computerized data acquisition systems - Camac and
Labview based.
- CAD and CAE (mechanical and electrical) software design systems.
- Microprobe test station and
Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM).
- A unique Young's Modulus apparatus for non-destructive testing
of solids and liquids.
- Laser Displacement Meter for sub-micron measurements.
- Vibration facility for stressing different materials.
- Vacuum chambers for thermal,
mechanical and electrical testing
of fuzzy carbon, aluminum, and steel pixel modules.
- Multiple chillers for thermal expansion measurements, thermal stress,
and use with the vacuum chamber setup.
- Cable Flexor
for testing state of the art multilayer cables under
millions of mechanical stress cycles at room temperature and below.
- Two radiation damage (neutron and gamma) facilities.
