29:62 GENERAL ASTRONOMY
Eleventh Homework Set...Due May 5, 1999

(1) A quasar has a redshift of 1.5. What is its distance and look-back time?

(2) Show that the Relativistically Correct (RC) expression for the Doppler effect reduces to the plain ole' Doppler effect when the speed of recession is much less than the speed of light.

(3) An extragalactic radio source has a magnetic field with strength tex2html_wrap_inline15 Tesla. It has energetic electrons which range in energy from 200 million electron volts (200 MeV) to 100 billion electron volts (100 GeV). What is the range of frequencies over which the radio galaxy radiates? What kind of astronomical instrument would be used to observe this object?

(4) Look at Figure 24-14. The radio galaxy 3C379.1 has a redshift z=0.256. What is the distance (parsecs) from the central component to the hot spots?

(5) If the jet of a radio galaxy with a redshift of 0.50 can be traced into 1 parsec from the galactic nucleus, what is the angular size of this feature?
